Edythe Doreen Becker was born on December 12, 1927 in Melville, Saskatchewan. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Arts and Honours Math, she became the youngest teacher in the Winnipeg School District. She married and gave birth to three sons- John, Paul, and Lawrence- who in turn partnered to produce a new generation of Beckers, including one great-grandchild. In the 1980’s, Doreen felt the tug to further explore questions of faith. She moved west to the Vancouver School of Theology and obtained Masters’ degrees in both Theology and Divinity. She worked as parish assistant at St. John the Evangelist in North Vancouver, but crossed the Rockies again to be ordained at the Cathedral in Prince Albert. She was the first Anglican woman priest in the Diocese of Saskatchewan, serving three rural churches in the parish of Leask. When Doreen retired, she returned to BC to be with her three “boys”. Here in the Diocese of New Westminster she found a church home at Holy Trinity Cathedral and enjoyed what she said were the best years of her life, including developing quite a fondness for draft beer. Doreen died on May 14, 2025, after a short stay in Burnaby Hospital.
